Remembrance & War Memorial

The Parish Council owns and maintains Hadley War Memorial which is situated in Manse Road, Hadley adjacent to the village green. The Council also arranges the annual Remembrance Parade and service each year on Remembrance Sunday. The Parade has always been strongly supported and continues to grow each year. Members of the regular and volunteer armed forces, ex-services organisations, cadet groups, scouts, boys brigade and many others join councillors for the parade which includes a service of remembrance at the war memorial.

In memory of the late Harry Patch - the last surviving Tommy

The Parish Council commissioned a bronze plaque in memory of the late Harry Patch, who prior to his death in 2009 had become the last surviving veteran of the trenches of the first world war - the "last Tommy". Harry had a link with the Parish, being married to his first wife Ada at Holy Trinity Church, Hadley in 1919.

The War Memorial

The War Memorial in Manse Road, Hadley was unveiled in 1952. The memorial commemorates the fallen of two world wars and is the focal point for the annual Remembrance Parade and Act of Remembrance on Remembrance Sunday.

Memorial & Souvenir Brochure of World War II

A Special Gift to Our Parish

At our Summer Fete on June 1st 2025, Cllr. Phil Millward was approached by one of our residents, Mrs. Jill Hine, who shared with us a remarkable piece of local history. Jill has generously donated a treasured book to the parish:
“Hadley and District Welcome Home Fund – Memorial & Souvenir Brochure – World War II.”

This book is a heartfelt tribute to the men and women of our parish who served during the Second World War. It not only honours those who returned but also serves as a memorial to those who did not. Within its pages, you’ll find names, addresses, and stories that bring to life the sacrifices and service of our forebears. It paints a vivid picture of where they lived and where they served, offering a deeply personal connection to our shared past.

Many of you may have seen this book before, but for others, it will be a new and moving discovery. We are incredibly grateful to Jill for this thoughtful and meaningful donation.

A special thank you also goes to Rob Davis, one of our dedicated Street Champions and a World War II historian, who kindly undertook the IT work to make this project possible.

We are currently exploring ways to preserve the original book to prevent further deterioration, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from and reflect on this important piece of our heritage.

Please take the time to explore this book, reflect on the lives it commemorates, and remember the relatives, friends, and neighbours who shaped our community
